Soledad Miranda (1943-1970)
Spanish actress and Jess Franco muse Soledad Miranda died 45 years ago today as the result of a tragic automobile accident near Lisbon, Portugal. She was already a famous actress and singer when she made a series of films directed by Franco, the best of which EUGENIE DE SADE and VAMPYROS LESBOS (both 1970) allow her to illustrate her skills as a serious actress and an erotic presence. She had just finished appearing as the female lead in Franco’s THE DEVIL CAME FROM AKASAVA (also 1970) and was about to sign.a lucrative contract with German producer Artur Brauner for more films when she had her fatal rendezvous on August 18, 1970. She, of course, lives on today via her film legacy, immortal in death, somehow more alive than ever.
